What affects the price of car insurance?

When it comes to insuring your Ford car, providers will consider several factors to calculate your premium.

These include:

  1. Your age

Young drivers (17-25 years old) will typically pay more than older more experienced drivers.

  2. Your driving history

Any previous driving offences, penalties or points on your licence will increase your premiums.

  3. Your no-claims discount

For every year you don’t claim on your car insurance, you’ll get a discount on your policy.

  4. Your address

Your insurer will take into account things like crime rates and traffic levels in your local area.

  5. Where you keep your car

Using a driveway or garage can make your car insurance cheaper than if you leave your vehicle on a street.

  6. Modifications

Changes like adding parking sensors can help to decrease the cost of your cover. Whereas engine modifications, like supercharging, will bump up the price.

What car insurance can I get for my Ford?

There are three types of car insurance, each offering different levels of cover.

Third party only (TPO):

This is the legal minimum level of insurance you can have in the UK. It covers the costs of any damage or injury you cause to other people, their vehicle or property when driving. But your car won’t be covered if it’s damaged or stolen.

Third party, fire and theft (TPFT):

It covers damage or injury to other people, their vehicle or property, plus repairs or replacement if your car gets stolen or damaged by fire.

Comprehensive cover:

This is the highest level of cover available and includes TPFT cover, as well as repair or replacement costs if your Ford is damaged or written off and it’s your fault. Comprehensive policies aren’t necessarily the most expensive option, so always compare prices.

How can I save on my Ford car insurance?

As well as shopping around and comparing quotes, there are a few other things you can do to get cheaper car insurance.

Paying annually

Although paying monthly might seem appealing, it usually means that you’ll be charged interest. Paying the full amount upfront will typically cost you less.

Consider multi-car insurance

If you’ve got more than one car at your address, it’s worth looking at multi-car cover. You'll get all the benefits of standard car insurance and there’s usually a discount for each car you add to the policy.

Increase your excess

Opting for a higher excess amount will help to reduce your premium. Just make sure you could afford to pay it should you need to make a claim.

Add a named driver

Adding a more experienced driver with a good driving history to your policy as a named driver can help reduce the cost, particularly if you’re a young driver.

Increase security

Making your car more secure will reduce the risk to your insurer which can help to lower your premiums. So it’s worth checking whether installing things like Thatcham-approved alarms, immobilisers and trackers make a difference to the cost.

Correctly estimate your mileage

If you don’t clock up a high annual mileage on your Ford, then let your insurer know. It could mean lower premiums. But always be honest - if you drive more in a year than you’ve declared, it might invalidate your insurance.

Build up your no-claims discount

You’ll get a discount for every year you don’t claim on your insurance. The more years you go claim-free, the better deal you can get.

Don’t wait to get quotes

Don’t be tempted to leave it until the last minute before you start shopping around. Our customers saved over 44% on average by buying their car insurance 27 days before their renewal date, compared with those renewing on the day.[2]

What add-ons can I get with my Ford insurance?

Features that are included as standard on insurance policies differ. If your Ford car insurance policy doesn’t have something you need, you could buy it as an optional extra.

Commonly available extras include:

Personal accident cover - Pays out if you have a serious injury or are killed in an accident. It covers loss of income and other expenses your family may incur. Also known as personal injury cover.

Motor legal protection - Helps cover the cost of legal expenses if you want to claim compensation for a motoring accident that wasn’t your fault.

Breakdown cover - Will help pay for recovery if your vehicle breaks down or needs repairing on the roadside.

Windscreen cover - Provides cover if you need to repair or replace the glass on your vehicle.

Courtesy car - If your Ford is written off or being repaired, you’ll be provided with a courtesy car until it’s replaced or returned.

No-claims discount protection - Making a claim usually means that you lose some or all of your discount. This could take years to build up again, but with this add-on you can pay an extra fee to protect it.

European driving cover - You’ll automatically get third party cover with your car insurance if you’re driving in Europe. But if you want the same level of cover that you have in the UK, you can pay extra to add this to your policy.

The history of Ford

Henry Ford founded the Ford Motor Company in Michigan in 1903, with a dream to ‘put the world on wheels’. In 1908, Ford launched the Model T - generally considered to be the first car that ordinary people could afford.

Creating the first moving assembly line, Ford went on to revolutionise car production and lead a new era in affordable vehicles. And with this, the brand’s popularity began to stretch across the globe.

In 1965, the Ford Transit Van was launched, going on to become one of the best-selling commercial vehicles in Europe. Today, Ford offers a wide range of cars, from petrol and diesel to hybrid and electric, including popular models like the Fiesta, Puma and Focus.

Frequently asked questions

To cancel the cover for your Ford car, you must be the main policyholder and you’ll need to:

  • Contact your insurance provider - Most will require you to call them if you want to cancel, although some insurers may let you do this online.
  • Provide your policy details - Make sure you have your policy number and policy documents to hand.
  • Find out if there are any charges - You may need to pay an admin or exit fee so check the terms and conditions.
  • Find out if you can get a refund - Depending on how far you are through the policy term, you may get a refund for the cover you haven’t used.
  • Record the details - Note down the date and time that you cancelled your policy and the name of anyone from your insurance company that you spoke to.

Remember that it’s illegal to drive without insurance. So, if you’re cancelling your cover, you’ll need to take out another policy or declare your car as off the road with a Statutory Off Road Notice (SORN).

If your Ford has been involved in an accident, most insurers will require you to make a claim within 24 hours.

You may need to do this online or you can call your provider’s helpline.

You’ll need:

  • Your policy number
  • Your name and address
  • The registration plates of the vehicles involved
  • Names and contact details of any drivers, passengers and witnesses involved
  • Details of the incident, including the date, time, location and weather conditions
  • Any evidence, like photos and videos of the scene and any damage that was caused
  • A crime reference number if the police have been involved

Most major car insurers now offer cover for electric cars, helping to lower premiums. There are also specialist electric car insurance providers that offer tailored policies, too.

You’ll have the same three levels of cover to choose from - TPO, TPFT or comprehensive.

There may be added extras to choose from like cover for damage, fire and theft of wall boxes, charging cables and your electric battery.

You’ll likely need specialist insurance for your classic Ford as they’re used differently to standard cars.

Policies for classic cars tend to include more niche types of cover, for instance if you’re displaying it at a vintage car fair, or if it’s being restored.

Just because your classic Ford requires specialist insurance doesn’t mean that you can’t shop around though.
